Major Course Guide
Year 1 │ Understanding English Literature
This course provides students with basic knowledge of English literature by understanding the characteristics of English literature by period and major authors and works by genre. As literature can be a mirror of an era, reading various genres of literature such as poetry, novels, and plays is an important medium for students to not only understand the genre of literature but also to recognize the culture and history of the society. In particular, understanding English literature plays an important role in recognizing the global language of English and developing the ability to read more deeply into the culture and history of the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition, by understanding the lives of people living in Anglo-American societies in each era in their own language, students can examine their ways of life and thoughts from an objective and critical perspective.
Year 2 │ Understanding American Cultures
Understanding American Culture is a course that provides an overview of American culture along the historical flow of its development, and aims to help learners to independently explore and understand related topics with continued interest in American culture based on the concepts and contents learned in the class. In particular, this course examines the characteristics of contemporary American society and culture, and aims to develop the ability to apply the knowledge learned in the class to real life by utilizing newspaper articles and video materials related to the topic.
Year 3 │ Translation : Theory and Practice
This course is designed to teach students how to translate efficiently into English through an understanding of translation theory and practical translation exercises. By focusing on practical translation exercises rather than theory, students are taught to master the interpretive difficulties of translation and develop the ability to produce accurate and appropriate translations. The materials to be translated include literature, essays, research materials, advertisements, movie subtitles, etc. in order to develop practical translation skills and to serve as a guide for students who are considering a career as a translator in the future.
Year 4 │ English Literature and Visual Media
This course aims to examine the symbiosis and win-win relationship between novels and movies by examining the place of literature in an era where video media has become a major method of communication. The course aims to examine the symbiotic relationship between literature and film by examining the ways in which literature can be visualized and the advantages and disadvantages of such visualization, based on the close relationship between literature and film media.
